SUMMARY:EVENT CANCELLED: Author's Talk and Concert - Hail Columbia! and the Music of the Founding Era
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nDue to the current public health emergency\, this event has been cancelled.  \nFrom the Revolutionary War through the antebellum era\, popular songs reflected different ideas about the meaning of liberty\, the future and nature of the republic and Americans’ proper place within it. Laura Lohman\, professor of music at Queens University of Charlotte\, will discuss and sign copies of her new book Hail Columbia! American Music and Politics in the Early Nation. David Hildebrand\, co-founder of the Colonial Music Institute\, will perform a selection of early patriotic tunes. \n\n\n\nThe talk and concert will last approximately one hour\, followed by a book signing and refreshments. Copies of the book will be available to purchase at the event. Registration is required for this free event. \n  \nAbout the Presenters\nLaura Lohman is a music scholar who explores the intersections of music and politics in varied cultures ranging from early America to twentieth-century Egypt. The author of Umm Kulthum: Artistic Agency and the Shaping of an Arab Legend\, 1967-2007\, Lohman has received funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities\, American Musicological Society\, and New England Regional Fellowship Consortium. She serves as director of the Center for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence and is a professor of music at Queens University of Charlotte in North Carolina. \nDavid Hildebrand specializes in researching\, recording and performing early American music. Since 1980 he has presented concerts and educational programs throughout the country for museums\, public schools and universities. In 1999\, along with music historian Ginger Hildebrand and dance historians Kate van Winkle and Robert Keller\, he founded the Colonial Music Institute\, which conducts and promotes research and educational outreach in the fields of early American music and dance. David holds a M.A. from the George WashingtonUniversity and a Ph.D. from The Catholic University of America\, both in musicology. \n  \n
