SUMMARY:Dinner and Lecture - Prelude to Yorktown: The 1780-1781 Virginia Campaign and the Siege of Yorktown
DESCRIPTION:This dinner and lecture at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown kicks off the Institute’s next two-day battlefield tour experience exploring one of the most iconic sieges in military history: the Siege of Yorktown. The evening begins at 4 p.m. with exclusive access to the museum for our guests\, who will have the ability to explore the various indoor galleries and outdoor interpretive centers of the museum. Cocktails will be available through a cash bar in the museum lobby\, followed by a buffet style dinner. Following dinner\, a lecture featuring Dr. J. Britt McCarley\, chief historian and director for the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) Military History and Heritage Program\, will analyze the 1780-81 Virginia campaign that culminated with the Siege of Yorktown\, before setting the stage for his guided tour of the battlegrounds the following day. Guests are encouraged to arrive early in the day on Friday\, as included with both ticket packages are complimentary tickets to the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown that will be honored throughout the museum’s normal operating hours on June 9. The dinner and lecture will conclude at approximately 8:45 p.m. \n  \nAbout the Speaker\nA native of Atlanta\, Ga.\, J. Britt McCarley holds a Ph.D. in U.S. history\, with a specialization in military history\, from Temple University in Philadelphia\, Pa\, where he studied with the late Dr. Russell F. Weigley. After working for the National Park Service\, Dr. McCarley joined the staff of the Army Historical Program in 1988. Since 2006\, he has served as the chief historian for the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) and the director of its military history and heritage program. His primary professional interests are in eighteenth\, and nineteenth\, century U.S. military history\, the interpretation and management of historic sites\, and the development of military history curriculum\, especially ways to technologically enhance instruction. Dr. McCarley is one of the U.S. Army’s leading staff ride facilitators\, including those covering the Siege of Yorktown for the last twenty-five years. Throughout his career\, Dr. McCarley has also written several publications and articles on various military campaigns throughout American history. These include The Atlanta Campaign: A Civil War Driving Tour of Atlanta-Area Battlefields (Cherokee Publishing\, 1989); The Atlanta and Savannah Campaigns\, 1864 (Department of the Army\, 2014); and “‘The Great Question of the Campaign Was One of Supplies’: A Reinterpretation of Sherman’s Generalship During the 1864 March to Atlanta in Light of the Logistic Strategy\,” featured in Beyond Combat: Essays in Military History in Honor of Russell F. Weigley (American Philosophical Society\, 2007). He is also a contributor to The Whirlwind War: The United States Army in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm (Department of the Army\, 1995).
