SUMMARY:Lecture – Maritime Archaeology of the Betsy: A Merchant Ship at War
DESCRIPTION:Underwater archaeologist John D. Broadwater discusses his work as the principal investigator for the Yorktown Shipwreck Archaeological Project\, conducted 1978-1989\, that located and examined British supply ships sunk off Yorktown\, Virginia\, during the climactic campaign of the Revolutionary War. \nThe talk will last approximately 45 minutes. \n  \nAbout the Speaker\nJohn Broadwater is the acting state underwater archaeologist with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. From 1992 to 2010 he worked for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)\, first as manager of the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary\, where he directed seven major expeditions to the remains of the Civil War ironclad USS Monitor\, and then from 2007 until his retirement in 2010 as its chief archaeologist. In 1978\, John was selected as Virginia’s first state underwater archaeologist\, where he was principal investigator for the Yorktown Shipwreck Archaeological Project. John has an M.A. in American studies from the College of William and Mary and a Ph.D. in maritime studies from the University of St. Andrews\, Scotland. \n
