SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture— Loyalists & Liberty: Savannah in the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Nora Fleming Lee\, chief executive officer of the Coastal Heritage Society in Savannah\, Ga.\, discusses the unexpected discovery of nineteen Revolutionary War cannons found in the Savannah River in 2021. Since the recovery of the cannons and other antiquities\, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers\, George State Department of Natural Resources\, and Coastal Heritage Society have joined forces to conserve the historic treasures. Upon completion of the conservation efforts\, the cannons and other artifacts will be displayed in a new core exhibition\, Loyalists & Liberty: Savannah in the American Revolution. This virtual talk will highlight the exciting discovery\, conservation efforts\, and research surrounding the artifacts\, along with where they’ll end up next. \nRegistration is required. She received a bachelor’s degree in history and minor in pre-law from Belmont Abbey College and a master’s degree in public history from Armstrong Atlantic State University (now Georgia Southern University). Nora joined Coastal Heritage Society in 2006\, with a focus on museum operations and collaborating with their historic preservation team on several capital projects to restore the historic Central of Georgia railroad site. Her role expanded in 2015\, when she was appointed chief operations officer and she was a key player in managing the expansion of Coastal Heritage Society’s scope with the additions of Savannah Children’s Museum\, Pin Point Heritage Museum and Harper Fowlkes House. After a national search\, Nora stepped into the role of chief executive officer of Coastal Heritage Society in January 2023. She is only the third CEO in the organization’s 50-year history.  She currently serves on the Visit Savannah Board of Advisors and Executive Committee\, and is a member of the Rotary Club of Savannah and the Propeller Club of Savannah. \n
