We are pleased to announce the third year of the Thomas J. McCahill III Fellowship, offered by the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of New Hampshire in collaboration with the American Revolution Institute of the Society of the Cincinnati, Inc., in Washington, D.C. The next McCahill Fellow will begin their term during the 2027–2028 academic year.
The Thomas J. McCahill III Fellowship provides up to $75,000 for a one-year period to support research, travel, housing, and per diem expenses for a scholar undertaking advanced research on a topic germane to American history during the colonial and Revolutionary periods. The fellowship is open to postdoctoral and independent scholars whose research would benefit from primary-source collections, with particular emphasis on the collections of the Society of the Cincinnati.
McCahill Fellows will have sustained access to the collections and professional staff of the Society of the Cincinnati’s research library at Anderson House, the Society’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. The library holds extensive rare books, manuscripts, prints, and reference works relating to the American Revolution and its era, as well as the archives of the Society of the Cincinnati. Applicants are encouraged to propose projects that will make substantive use of these collections and, where appropriate, to identify specific holdings relevant to their research.
The McCahill Fellow’s research is expected to be on one or more of the following periods:
- the Revolutionary War;
- colonial British America, preferably for research leading in some way to an issue of the revolutionary period; and
- the early American republic, preferably for research leading in some way to an issue of the revolutionary period.
Applicants should submit the following:
- A curriculum vitae, including educational background, publications, and professional experience.
- A brief research proposal, not to exceed two pages, describing the proposed project and how the applicant anticipates using the research library and collections at Anderson House.
- A writing sample of 10–25 pages in the form of a published article, book excerpt, or academic paper, submitted in Word or PDF format.
- A proposed research schedule and budget, including anticipated housing, travel, and other eligible research expenses.
The deadline for applications is October 31, 2026, and applicants should expect to be notified of the Selection Committee’s decision by January 31, 2027.
