Celebrate Spring with Art in Bloom DC at Anderson House

The popular exhibition returns to the Institute’s headquarters for the third year

February 16, 2023

Back by popular demand, Art in Bloom DC returns for its third annual exhibition at Anderson House this spring, from March 27 to March 30, 2023. Following in the footsteps of the Boston Museum of Art and the San Francisco-based De Young Museum, Art in Bloom is a prestigious exhibition that celebrates both fine art and fine floral design through the display of flower arrangements as interpretations of artwork at historic Anderson House. Completed in 1905, Anderson House was the home of American diplomat Larz Anderson and his wife, author and philanthropist Isabel Anderson, for more than thirty years. This National Historic Landmark has been the headquarters of the Society of the Cincinnati since 1938 and opened its doors as a museum in 1939.

Art in Bloom provides a unique opportunity in the nation’s capital to stroll through the museum at your own pace, viewing interpretations of specific artworks, furnishings, and architectural details rendered in a floral medium by some of Washington’s most creative and innovative floral designers. In addition to 30 individual floral designers, this year’s exhibition also includes representatives of the National Cathedral Flower Guild and the Daughters of the American Revolution—all showcasing their floral prowess. Their inspiration includes 17th-century Flemish tapestries, Buddhist sculpture, an Italian alabaster fireplace, and an 18th-century American cannon used during the Revolutionary War.

The exhibition will be free and open for viewing on Monday, March 27 from 12 to 4 p.m., and Tuesday, March 28 through Thursday, March 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Our expert museum docents will be on hand to discuss the history of Anderson House, the collections, and the Society of the Cincinnati and its American Revolution Institute. Guests will also have special access to the garden, which is not normally open to the public.

A festive evening reception will cap off the first day of Art in Bloom DC on Monday, March 27, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Guests will have the unique opportunity to explore the installations, mingle with the floral designers, and enjoy delicious bites from Spilled Milk Catering.

During the four-day exhibition, there will also be special ticketed demonstrations from floral designers Atelier Ashley Flowers, HBO’s Full Bloom Finalist Sarah Khan Event Styling, La Fleur Du Jour, and BLK FLWR MRKT. Registrations are required for these hour-long demonstrations.

Anderson House is the exclusive venue for Art in Bloom DC 2023. The event is co-produced by the Institute, Margo Fischer of Bright Occasions and Ashley Greer of Atelier Ashley Flowers.
